Anthony Richardson has already seen some ups and downs as a rookie quarterback for the Colts, but the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Florida will miss some time following Sunday's Week 5 win over the Titans.

According to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Richardson suffered a Grade 3 AC joint sprain that is expected to cause him to miss four to six weeks. On Wednesday, the Colts officially placed their rookie quarterback on Injured Reserve, meaning he will miss at least the next four games.

Richardson, who won the starting job over Gardner Minshew and Sam Ehlinger in the preseason, wowed NFL scouts with his incredible physicality during the pre-draft process. Early injuries have already stymied a promising start to Richardson's rookie campaign: He also suffered a Week 2 concussion.

The shoulder injury occurred in the second quarter against the Titans on Sunday, when a designed run saw him get tackled with linebacker Harold Landry III's full body weight on top of him. Richardson was taken out of the game at that point and did not return.

Richardson was effectively drafted off of one other-worldly season at Florida. He completed 176 of 327 passes in 2022 for 2,549 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed 103 times for 654 yards and another nine scores. He also threw nine interceptions as well. With the Colts, Richardson is 50 for 84 through the air (59.5 percent) for 577 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He also has 25 carries for 136 yards and four touchdowns.

With the Gators, Richardson battled some additional injuries, although they weren't the impact injuries he's suffered with the Colts. A meniscus tear and hamstring injury hindered him in Gainesville.

What is Anthony Richardson's injury?

Richardson reportedly has a Grade 3 AC joint sprain, (effectively a collarbone injury).

Richardson has no previous problems with shoulder injuries in the past, which could be a good sign for the Colts. He did suffer a concussion earlier in the season, which kept him out for most of Week 2 and Week 3 for the Colts.

How long is Anthony Richardson out?

According to Rapoport, Richardson is likely to be out for at least a month — and possibly longer.

With the Colts placing Richardson on IR, he will miss at least the next four games at the Jaguars, vs. the Browns, vs. Saints and at the Panthers. He would first be eligible to return in Indianpolis' Week 10 game vs. the Patriots in Frankfurt, Germany, though the Colts may consider keeping him out for that game as well considering their bye is in Week 11.

Normal recovery time for an AC joint is four to six weeks.

Richardson has been impressive for the Colts, who hope they've found their franchise QB in the big-framed signal-caller. The big question moving forward will be how he'll stay on the field, given his ability to run was a major boon to drafting him for the Indianapolis front office.
